
Winter is coming and that’s OK. Some good fishing is still to be had in the winter. But now that your fly boxes are mostly empty, winter is also the best time to restock them. So instead of just buying your flies, how about honing your tying skills or learning to tie?
There is just no better way to enhance your fly fishing experience than to hook up on a fly you tied yourself!
I understand that there are some “go to” flies that are better left to the experts, and size 24’s just disappear between my big fingers. But that still leaves plenty of flies that you could tie yourself. That’s why we have built a great tying program here at the Covey to help you learn or improve your skills at any level.
It’s a great experience for every fly fisher to at least get a basic fly tying experience. Then there are just some flies that everyone should tie because they are so simple, like the San Juan Worm, or a Glo-Bug (egg), or a Zebra Midge.
If you've never tied flies or just haven’t perfected your technique then make that a winter goal. At Angler’s Covey we have 4 ways to help you fill your fly boxes:

This is a chance for you to make the first steps in learning how to tie a fly. This brief introduction will give you a taste of the entry level skills you need to learn fly tying. You will learn how to use all of the essential tools, basic materials and their uses, then on to the basic knots and lashings. Finally, you will get to tie your first fly! Just think of the fun you can have and the money you can save if you can make a few of your own flies. If you’re new to fly fishing, or if you have been a fly fisher for sometime but have not learned to tie, this is the class for you.

Explore Fly Tying 201 and 301
There is nothing more exhilarating than landing your first fish on a fly you tied yourself.
Want to learn how?
Come learn how to tie flies. We teach an intensive complete introductory class to fly tying.
Explore Fly Tying 201
This class is a 4 hour class. This will teach you all of the basics to include equipment needed and proper uses, materials, and techniques. You will learn all of this while tying some the more popular patterns used in our region. You will come away with the skill and confidence to tie your own flies. Minimum requirement of having taken the free 101 class.
Explore Fly Tying 301
This is the next level of tying. You will learn some more advanced styles techniques and materials in tying many of the top flies in our region. Minimum requirement of having taken the 201 class.
After these classes you can continue to improve your skills by putting them into practice by taking the next step and signing up for our One Fly Classes. These classes will focus on one fly or technique each class taught by our local experts. See our calendar available classes and times.

Welcome to our new weekly fly tying class. These workshops are going to provide weekly instruction on specific patterns, styles, and techniques. Interested in tying a Copper John? How about learning how to use different dubbing techniques? Take one or take them all. We will have many of our premier local tiers and occasional special guests.

Location/Times: Classroom 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Angler's Covey.

Prerequisite: The Discover Fly Tying Class or previous experience tying flies. This is not a beginner's class.

This is an "open to the public" night to come and tie with other folks, share and learn new techniques, tips and tricks. You never know who might show up. You can bring your own equipment or use the tools we have at the shop, or just watch other tiers. The store will stay open later so you can stock up on materials for the new skills learned. Watch for weekly specials on tie nights!

If you are serious about learning to tie flies this is an intense two night class starting on Monday and continuing on Tuesday.
The class consists of two four hour sessions where we will cover some basic tying techniques that will teach you to tie a good number of nymphs, emergers, streamers, and dry flies. You will learn to use different fly tying equipment, materials and special techniques. All materials and equipment are provided by Anglers Covey.
