Current Conditions

Tarryall has been fishing very well recently. Actually, its been good up here since ice off back in March. While this lake doesnt get the press the rest of the South Park lakes do, its always a great option. The fish class here is much smaller than the other south Park lakes, but there are still some very nice fish here. In fact, we have been seeing some pretty large cutthroats being caught here. We have seen success all over the lake from both watercraft and from shore.  We have seen some spots that produce great results, and some others that are way slower. If you are fishing areas that are slow, dont be afraid to play with your depth on nymph rigs, casting distances, and even flies. A little adjustment is oftentimes the key. The fish are still relatively close to shore but are feeding a little deeper now. This lake can get windy, but its a fine line.  Days with no wind will be less productive.

Tactics:

Static indicator or slow crawling flies has been effective. This is also a good time to throw streamers. You can also find success by fishing hoppers throughout the lake.   Always look for cruising fish too. If you see fish cruising that would be a good area to try.

Hatches:

As mentioned above, the big chironomid hatch is happening now and presents a great opportunity for fishing these subsurface. Fish are gorging on them in the pupae stage and even taking a few adults off of the surface. Static indicator fishing in some chop will be the most effective technique right now. These bugs are large, so be sure to use some of the larger profile, skinny and long midge larva and pupae. The callibaetis are also here and increasing in numbers each day. This is the main hatch the stillwater angler will want to take advantage of. In terms of bug life, there is a lot happening right now.

Tips:

Work tandem indicator rigs anywhere from a couple feet to about 8 feet down. When static indicator nymphing, its a good tip to "bump" your flies every once in awhile. They like movement!

Weather:

Short Term-  Today will cool off a bit and be absolutely beautiful. We could see an afternoon thunderstorm here today, so keep an eye out for that. Any storm should be brief and things should clear up fast. We will dry out and warm up next week. Temps could get close to record highs on Wednesday and we will see temps in the mid 80's! Precipitation chances are non existent during this time. Heading towards the end of week, precipitation chances will increase again. We have decent chances of rain from Friday through the weekend, and into next week. Temps will remain warm though. In all, this coming week looks like a great time to head out to the water.

Long Term-  With the increased precipitation chances next week, it looks like we may start to see some consistent afternoon rain coinciding with the summer monsoon season. Temps will also be nice and in the 70's. Longer range forecasts have been hinting at this for a little while now, and this looks like the set up to that. We desperately need to get some consistent rainfall as our snowpack statewide is already gone. This is about 3 weeks earlier than normal, and expected after our low snow year. Each year when this happens, our fire danger increases.
