Rough and Tumbling Creek is part of the upper South Fork of the South Platte headwater drainage and is located just outside of the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness area. As Rough and Tumbling Creek leaves the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness area it flows into a private ranch for a couple of miles, then just below this is a section of public land that can be accessed with a 4-wheel drive vehicle. There is about 1.5 miles of creek that has public assess. The Forest Service roads to get to this area are in moderate condition and 4-wheel drive and moderate off-road driving skill are strongly suggested. This area is south of Fairplay and is 8 miles off Highway 285.
After seeing the water, I was a little surprised to not catch more that just a few brook trout. This is perfect habitat for brook trout to flourish. But after landing several brown trout between 8-12 inches it became clear that the Browns were eating more than just a few hoppers. This is a small section and it would not take very many anglers to feel crowded, but it is out of the way you feel like you have the entire area to yourself.
Hoppers, Ants, and Caddis are the primary fly selecton to consider. Don't fish a hole too long. Some beaver ponds seemed void of trout while others had plenty. Look for undercut banks. Enjoy.
