One of the great things about flyfishing is that there is a new opportunity every year -- maybe even every time out! -- to get into this adventure called fly fishing. We're blessed to live in Colorado where we can fish year-round -- so learning opportunities happen with every change of the season on the calendar. Read more ...

Reality Revisited

08/18/12 at 07:57 AM | by Vince Puzick

Dave's post the other day kept me thinking for a few days about getting away...unplugging, disconnecting, getting out of range of cell coverage. That need to get away became even stronger late on Thursday afternoon. "One of those days" had turned into four in a row. Read more ...

Fly Fishing Jazz: Audible Fishing

08/17/12 at 06:06 AM | by Vince Puzick

I REMEMBER the first time I heard brown trout eat. It was on the Bighorn River, well downstream of the 13-mile takeout, during an unexpected burst of pale morning duns on a sultry Montana afternoon.

I’m not talking about the sound of splashing, slurping or even sipping. I’m talking about jaws opening and snapping shut. Read more ...

It's Streamers!

With Fall fast approaching, it's time to start thinking about streamer fishing. As the water temps start to cool and the browns get the urge to procreate, it is time to bust out the “meat box” and your favorite 6 weight and go swing some streamers. Read more ...

Never the Same

08/13/12 at 09:13 PM | by Vince Puzick

Heraclitus is famous for his quote "No man ever steps in the same river twice." His philosophy captures the fact that both the river and the man are different. In my short time of fly fishing, I have experienced the same sense of newness every time I go to the river.

TU: Conservation nerds and the tale of Hermosa Creek

08/13/12 at 05:43 AM | by Vince Puzick

Here at TU, we spend a lot of time talking about watersheds.

We conservation nerds can find the most befuddling things to occupy the hours of the day. But, much to the dismay of our poor, bored-to-tears spouses and significant others, this notion we love so much here – the idea of protecting quality, connected, large-scale chunks of habitat – is catching on.

And it’s a good thing, too.

Case in point: the community reaching out to preserve Hermosa Creek in Colorado.

08/09/12 at 05:38 AM | by Vince Puzick

Sometimes while fishing the Trico hatch I lose the fly. I just can’t find it on the water. But I catch a lot of fish by guessing. But it is not just random guessing -- it's somewhat logical and informed guesses. If you also lose your fly here are a few tricks. Read more ...

Stillwater: Fishing Spinney

Kenny Romero with a catch at Spinney

I fished Spinney Saturday and Sunday with particularly good success on Sunday. Saturday was very hot and the fish were not on the move. The bite really slowed down in the area I was fishing around noon. Saturday afternoon/evening brought rain showers and cooled things down. That did the trick for Sunday. Read more ...

Widen Your View, See More Fish

07/28/12 at 06:37 AM | by Vince Puzick

I was fishing the Blue River at dusk on Thursday and out of the corner of my eye, I saw a rise in the shadow just downstream from me closer to the bank. Then I received this email from Anthony Surage:

"An important skill to develop is to see the bigger picture while fishing. I try to use my peripheral vision to pick up other fish that are rising outside of the main run I might be fishing. Out of the corner of my eye, I might catch a glimpse of a surface disturbance upstream or downstream or across or maybe even just behind me..." Read more ...

Wait a Minute, Cast Somewhere Else

07/25/12 at 07:06 AM | by Vince Puzick

Ernest Hemingway had his Old Man and The Sea. Angler's Covey has Anthony Surage who offers this tip for fishing the trico hatch in 11 Mile Canyon. One of the most simplistic tricks, but most effective and overlooked, while dry fly fishing the famous South Platte Trico Mayfly hatch is to simply cast somewhere else. I have watched fly fishers cast again and again over the same fish in the same exact drift line hoping the fish will eventually take the fly. Read more ...

Save Bristol Bay

07/23/12 at 06:09 AM | by Vince Puzick

The Bristol Bay region of southwest Alaska is home to the last great wild sockeye salmon fishery in the world. It's also home to enormous mineral deposits-copper, gold, molybdenum-estimated to be worth over $300 billion. Now, two foreign mining companies are proposing to extract this mineral wealth by digging one of North America's largest open-pit mines, the "Pebble Mine," at the headwaters of Bristol Bay.
