The dog days of summer sometimes require extra attention to gear and accessories. Oh, we’re not talking more sunscreen and bug repellant. We’re not talking that new extra-wide brimmed hat. We’re talking gear for your four-footed fishing companion. Check out this list of gear for your hound.

Staff Spotlight: Becky Chaney

07/17/18 at 07:05 AM | by Vince Puzick

Becky Chaney, our new Executive Assistant at Angler’s Covey, and her husband have owned a cabin near Divide for many years. For eight years, they made almost monthly treks to the cabin from their home in Kansas City to enjoy all that Colorado has to offer: a more laid back lifestyle, beautiful hiking spots, and fly fishing. Finally, in October of 2017, they made the big decision and made the move to Colorado for their permanent residence.

Don't Find Yourself in Hot Water

07/12/18 at 06:48 AM | by Vince Puzick

At some point nearly every summer talk turns to water temperatures. And rightly so. In Colorado, and in cold water fisheries in general, fish thrive when water temps are in the 50-60 degree range. As we approach the mid-point of summer, and the dog days in August, it’s vital to pay attention to the conditions around us – including the temperature of the streams and rivers we are fishing. In fact, it really is a life or death situation for our trout.

Kids Say the Darndest Things: Happy Father's Day

06/16/18 at 07:15 PM | by Vince Puzick

I started thinking about how an appreciation of the outdoors gets passed along from one generation to the next. As we approach Father’s Day, I reached out to the children of some of our Guides to see what they learned from their fathers about life in general, about nature, and about fly fishing, specifically. From seven years old to over thirty, there are some universal truths from these “kids.”

Lessons Learned. Memories Made. Fathers Fishing.

06/13/18 at 05:00 PM | by Vince Puzick

Awhile back I asked my brother and sister what they remembered about fishing with our dad. Although my dad occasionally fly fished, we mainly fished with spinning rods and reels. Lessons from fishing are some sort of a universal learning, though, right? On this Father’s Day, here are some memories — and memories in the making — in recognition of fathers and fishing.

Small Stream Satisfaction

05/13/18 at 07:09 AM | by Vince Puzick

Our great adventure of fly fishing is awesome in the fact that it is not just one great adventure. That’s the beauty and the “life-long learning” aspect of it. Sometimes you want to chase the slabs, the hawgs that get all the Facebook likes and Instagram love. But maybe sometimes you want a little something different. And when I say little, I mean small – as in small stream satisfaction by fishing some of our backcountry creeks and streams.

Current Conditions and a Wacky Spring

05/04/18 at 05:19 AM | by Vince Puzick

The conversation at this time of year turns to spring run-off and questions about how high the flows may get and how long run-off might last. Well, this year it’s going to be pretty much a crap shoot in terms of trying to make any sort of prediction because of our relatively dry winter, at least in some parts of the state, and our current snow pack. Our resident and expert entomologist Robert Younghanz, “The Bug Guy,” weighs in regarding current conditions.

Destined for Adventure

04/25/18 at 05:21 AM | by Vince Puzick

Sharing fishing stories over dinner with a group of anglers is not a bad way to end the day. You can hear the satisfaction of a good day on the water, tales of the number of fish to the net or the heft of that one that “may have been the biggest I’ve ever caught.” That was the mood after Day One of our two-day mini destination trip this past weekend. Angler’s Covey hosted the trip, and Three Rivers Resort & Outfitters and Willowfly Anglers out of Almont, Colorado delivered the adventure.

From A Guide's Perspective: What Makes a Great Trip?

04/02/18 at 01:45 PM | by Vince Puzick

So I asked a handful of Angler's Covey guides what makes for a great guided fly fishing trip -- from a guide's perspective. Even though the ten guides had different opinions on some of the specifics specifics, they agreed that a successful trip boils down to three big things: the teaching and learning experience, expectations for the trip, and the client's attitude toward the experience.

Smith Optics: I can see clearly now

03/09/18 at 06:50 AM | by Vince Puzick

I’m a bit of a skeptic, I have to admit. I don’t always buy into all of the hype about a given product. Since I don’t have a lot of “disposable income” (when I’m not making these blog entries, I’m in the world of education), I am unable and very reluctant to make a purchase just for having the latest bells and whistles. But I finally gave in when a handful of guides here at Angler’s Covey kept saying that having high quality sunglasses was key – and Smith optics were top-notch. I made the purchase, and I can see clearly now.

The Little Red Book of Fly Fishing, co-written by Kirk Deeter and Charlie Meyers is one of those books that should be on every fly fishers bookshelf or sitting on their tying table. Just keep it handy. It’s packed with such great info in an easily accessible format.
