Couples on the River: A Birthday Story

08/01/17 at 02:00 PM | by Vince Puzick

We first met Charlie and Sita in the shop prior to their Couples Evening on the River trip. This trip was for Sita's birthday, and she was somewhat ambivalent about going fly fishing. We see this often as folks, and especially women, tend to have very little confidence or even much interest at the prospect of fly fishing. We assured her that she would have fun and to keep an open mind.

Looks like rain. And some more rain. And more rain. It’s “Monsoon Season” here in Colorado, and we have had a couple of weeks now of predictable rainfall in the late afternoons and evening. All the water has been great for our lawns, and they sure have impacted our local fisheries from the Arkansas River to the South Platte watershed.

Each Chance, Best Chance

07/08/17 at 07:32 AM | by Vince Puzick

Sometimes in my excitement to get my fly on the water, I rush things. This past week, while fishing some small streams at high altitude, I consciously worked on slowing things down. My goal was to make each chance the best chance.

06/26/17 at 03:14 AM | by Vince Puzick

What makes for a successful day on the water? A friend of mine shared some sage wisdom: a successful day on the river can be defined by how much fun the angler had. Sometimes I need to check my own expectations when I am out enjoying this adventure called fly fishing.

Fishing Cheesman Canyon

06/21/17 at 07:50 AM | by Vince Puzick

Cheesman Canyon is technical fishing even under more-or-less “normal” conditions. Increase the flows to 1100 cfs, stain the water the color of Lipton tea, and you have yourself some tough fishing conditions. That was the case during Jon Easdon's Learn to Fish Cheesman Class in the spring of 2015. Before we left the shop for the Canyon, Easdon said, “We’ll have to think out of the box a little today.” And thinking out of the box really paid off. Jon is offering the class again this Sunday, June 25, 2017. Registration info below! Here's a look back at that memorable class in 2015.

Stillwater Fly Fishing: Try it, You’ll Love It!

05/24/17 at 04:36 AM | by Vince Puzick

Stillwater fly fishing can be one of the most effective and thrilling ways to catch large trout in Colorado. Many fly fishers overlook this fantastic opportunity in favor of rivers and streams because they believe that stillwater is too mysterious, or they just aren’t aware of the great fishing available on our local ponds, lakes and reservoirs. Fantastic fly fishing is just waiting for you in town, or a within a short one- or two-hour drive from Colorado Springs on the Pikes Peak water shed, on reservoirs on the South Platte river drainage, or on the many high country lakes “just up the road.”

A Kayak Experience

05/22/17 at 08:10 AM | by Vince Puzick

Because our rivers and streams are not going to get bigger and aren’t going to grow in number, we have to begin looking outside the box in the search for different opportunities to explore our vast waters of Colorado. In this endeavor, we started to look at stillwater options in the region and different ways to fish these sometimes overlooked fly fishing destinations. Our partners at Pikes Peak Outfitters had an interesting solution: kayaks.

A Look at the Colorado Fly Fishing Guide Academy

04/29/17 at 06:14 AM | by Vince Puzick

When Neil Luehring and Robert Younghanz began to design the Colorado Fly Fishing Guide Academy, they posed a question that guided their thinking: “What is a professional fly fishing guide?” Guides don’t merely take people fishing. So what is this role that combines fly-fishing expertise, coaching, teaching, and fosters a passion for fly fishing? Oh, and you have to be able to make a great lunch, too.
